How to Make Small Spaces Look Bigger using Staging

By Chris Hammond

Many people mistakenly believe that home staging is only for those who are trying to sell their homes.

However, the truth is that anyone can benefit from techniques used in home staging, regardless of whether they are trying to sell their home or not. One of the main benefits of home staging is that it can make small spaces appear larger. If you live in a small home or apartment and are looking for ways to make your space look and feel bigger, read on for some helpful tips.
One of the quickest and easiest ways to make a small space appear larger is to repaint the walls in light, neutral colours. For example Farrow and Balls most popular current colours are Cornforth White and Ammonite. These colours reflect light instead of absorbing it, which makes the space feel brighter and more open. In addition, light colours trick the eye into believing a space is larger than it actually is. If you’re not ready to commit to repainting your entire home, start with one room and see how you like the results before moving on to the next room.
Another way to make a small space appear larger is to get rid of any unnecessary clutter that might be taking up precious square footage. Go through each room in your home and consider what items you can live without. Do you really need that stack of magazines on the coffee table? How about those clothes that you never wear but keep “just in case?” If you’re not using it or don’t love it, get rid of it! Once you’ve decluttered your home, you’ll be amazed at how much bigger it feels.
In addition to making your home feel more inviting, plants can also help to create the illusion of more space. Place a few large plants in corners or near windows to draw the eye upwards and make the space feel taller.
Mirrors are another great way to make a small space appear larger than it actually is. When placed strategically, mirrors can reflect both natural and artificial light throughout a room, making it feel brighter and more open. You can hang a mirror on a wall or prop one up on a shelf or mantlepiece. Just be sure that it’s placed where it will reflect either a window or a light source so that maximum light is being reflected back into the room.
Finally, consider swapping out heavy drapery for lighter, airier fabrics such as linen or cotton voile curtains. Not only do these fabrics let in more natural light (which again makes the space feel brighter), but they also have a breezy feel that helps open up the room visually.
With just a few simple changes, you can transform your home and make it feel twice as big!
