In my photographs I aim to shoot compositions which communicate the space and draw the eye through the image. Interiors photography should ideally encourage the viewer to imagine themselves in the scene or hint at what else may be just outside of the frame. On a number of occasions, I have come across two different issues when approaching a residential shoot:
1. An empty, newly finished space may have interesting architectural features but when completely clear and unfurnished, options for angles and compositions can be limited. There is often nothing in the foreground to convey depth and draw the eye through the image.
2. A well lived in space brings challenges. Unfortunately, the camera has an ability to make a perfectly tidy space appear cluttered and the eye often has too many places to go in a photograph. This requires time to move household items around or out of the frame before shooting.
Property staging solves both of these problems and gives me the time I need to concentrate on my photography. When I come into a space where all the details have been carefully coordinated with the furniture and decor, I instantly have a number of compositions ready to go. Artwork, accessories and props with complementary colours help bring the whole space together. A well designed interior helps to sell a lifestyle and makes it easier for me to tell a story with my photographs.
When shooting residential interiors, I very much enjoy collaborating on set with skilled property stagers and stylists. Bouncing ideas back and forth can bring an extra boost of creativity to a shoot and helps finalise decisions over positioning furniture and styling items.
